I've been in the industry since 1988, my father Luigi opened his first barber shop in 1961 on the Gold Coast and I am so glad I witnessed and experienced in person the switch of the movement. We were pretty much the only barber shop in the area for so many years while hair salons were popping up everywhere. But now we are seeing barber shops return, actually not only did they return, they are a massive trend right now!
I've never seen in my life so many barber shops on the Gold Coast and around the world and barbers being so proud of their job. I think it is fantastic.
I would definitely say that with the era of social media people started to care more about their personal appearance, and men have been involved too; the hipster and beard culture are an example of that. Also the introduction in the market of some gimmicky grooming products helped the rise in barber shops and the boom that we have been witnessing for nearly 7 years now.
Today's barber shops are helping to define and enhance masculinity, providing men with high-end services like hot towel shaves, beard trims, excellent fades and of course any kind of hair style requested by a male client. A barber knows how to cut a man's hair, he knows how to use clippers or a razor. That's pretty much the difference between a barber shop and a hair salon, plus the different vibe you will find in them.
Everyone in the barber shop is involved in the conversation. The barbers, the clients getting their haircut and the ones waiting and in between the banter, jokes are told.
Barber shops are a place to socialise, have a coffee or a beer, relax, meet some friends.
So proud of being in this industry for over 30 years and looking forward to many years to come. This year I wanted to reinvent myself with my new creation of Mobile Barber Shop Depot after running my shop Luigi & Sons Barber Shop in Mermaid Waters for over 20 years. I felt the need to create something new that my industry has never seen before.
